“Paint pictures with words.”

My brother called me to tell me Brian Jacques had died this past weekend. As an adolescent, a whole stage of my life revolved around his books. I truly enjoyed reading them, and loved even more his audiobooks – where his voice could really make the story live. So here, instead of a retrospective or eulogy, is a video of Brian Jacques making people laugh with silly voices.

This is its own genre now?

Teen Paranormal Romance

I haven’t been to a bookstore recently (because in me they tend to bring out all seven deadly sins), so I wonder what else I’ve missed.

Wish these were available as prints. Or actual book editions. Terrifyingly beautiful. Beautifully terrifying.

Quick Heads Up: Lemony Snicket Will Buy You Ice Cream

…If you are in New York this Saturday. I’d say “you lucky bastard,” but that doesn’t seem quite appropriate.

Edit: This post also contains a video of Mr. Snicket describing his new book. Unfortunately the video player doesn’t show up in the RSS feed, so you will have to click through. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Thanks Fandom!Secrets

Dark Whispers: I HATE people who bitch about how long this took. He has written TONS of books in the meantime, and this one was extra long and REALLY good. QUIT WHINING.

Tonight’s Fandom!Secrets posting has just made me aware that book three of The Unicorn Chronicles came out (last year). I felt really silly reading a girly childish looking book about unicorns when I read book 1 in elementary school. I don’t think I let anyone see me read (twice) book 2 which came out years later (in 1999!) Now I don’t think I care if anyone sees me read book 3 or forthcoming book 4. I’d pretty much accepted I’d never find out the end of this story – I’m so excited to get to the library!

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Begining, Free Online

If reading books online is your cup of tea (or glass of tea, stirred with an absinthe spoon). If it isn’t, and you haven’t read these books, treat yourself to a trip to the library.

Picture of the Day: Les Mis Lolwhut!?

Kanye: Yo Valjean, I'm really happy for you and Imma let you finish, but Enjolras had one of the best death scenes in the whole book. The whole book!

Found at the Library

The Snowman

The one thing I can’t understand about (one of) the local libraries I frequent is how they decide which books go on their “Graphic Novels” and “Graphic Novels for Children” shelves. This one was found in the children’s room.

I can’t wait to read this. It’s illustrated by famed Italian erotic comic artist Milo Manara (the fact that caused my double take in the children’s room) and although it’s titled “The Snowman” the cover looks remarkably like the Swamp Thing and John Constantine (though JC rarely carries a gun). I love finding odd books!
