…or, “How NOT to Make Russian Haired Sausage.”

Transmition from Heather:

Apparently the following (http://englishrussia.com/?p=3344) is the latest amusing foreignesque food to hit the Internet. And being that I have my own apartment which features its own kitchen in addition to a a large research grant from UNH and far too much free time, I decided to attempt this. Thankfully my roommates were not home to try to dissuade me.

HINT: Just because that video at the bottom appears to be in Russian… it is not! In hindsight this would have been useful to watch.

on my way home from work I stopped at hannafords to pick up hot dogs and spaghetti. I decided to make two of these and called my friend Dave to come over for supervision / so he could make one too.

By the time he walked over I already had started attaching full pieces of spaghetti to my first hot dog. This rapidly became heavy and absurdly porcupineish! Please note that my haired sausage was much larger than my head.

This, of course, caused some problems. Namely that the spaghettis would not fit in my pot. (In my defense, I swear we had a larger pot once.) Improvisation time! I ended up having to remove some of the spaghetti on the bottom so it would sort of mostly fit in there. Watching it all collapse into the pot was entertaining though.

Here is Dave reminding us the more efficient and obvious way to avoid this problem… His Haired Sausage looks much better than mine. Neater, certainly! Though Dave came closer to actually making russian haired sausages more accurately than I did, we were still off by a little bit. You are actually supposed to break the spaghetti in half and then shove it THROUGH the sausage. Oops.

Either way they WERE delicious and possibly mildly nutritious. If you like meat and pasta I do recommend them!

I’ve gotta say Heather, I’m very disappointed in the lack of things on fire in this cooking adventure. Try harder next time!

Heather Froehlich is so sexy she doesn’t need cooking skills, pants, or a respect for gravity. She spends her time hunting legendary pronouns that have not been seen by humans for hundreds of years.

Edit to add: Been following the comment explosion on this post. To all the people who see random ideas on the internet, then go off and try them out: I salute you!

This recipe has been floating around the Internet for a while but I had not yet been brave enough to try it. Blog reactions vary from “gross” to “amazing.” Let’s admit it: a single serving cupcake, made quickly and with the minimum of supplies? A cupcake whenever you crave one?! It must be too good to be true! Here is what I discovered…

Procedure:

Ingredients and Tools: Flour, sugar, egg, cocoa powder, milk, oil, mug, and recipe. Also, you’ll need a teaspoon (not shown) for measuring and mixing.

First, mix four tablespoons each of sugar and flour, and two tablespoons cocoa powder in the mug of your choice.

Crack one egg into the mug. (If you are not practiced at this, you may want to crack the egg into a separate dish and then transfer it – but don’t worry, cracking eggs IRL is not as hard as in Cooking Mama.) Mix the egg very well with the dry ingredients.

Almost done! Add three tablespoons of milk and three tablespoons of oil. Mix completely.

Microwave the mug and its contents for approximately three minutes.

Edit: Your cook time may vary. I should have mentioned, my microwave is incredibly underpowered and you will probably need less time then I did. Watch it, and when the cupcake stops rising above the lip of the mug it should be time to take it out.

This part looks scary. The cupcake is going to rise in a large column out of the mug…oh god…

…only to collapse when you take it out of the microwave.

Results:
At this point I was looking at the unattractive top of my “cupcake” regretting this experiment. It looks awful.

Guess what? It tastes great! I was afraid it would be dry and rubbery, but it wasn’t – it was moist, and delicious too! The consistency was different than an oven-baked cupcake, more dense then I expected, but nonetheless chocolaty and satisfying! I will definitely be making this again.

Conclusion: Huge success!
